Writing An Admissions Essay To Get Into Top Schools

Writing An Admissions Essay To Get Into Top Schools The biggest mistake I ever made was repeatedly re-reading everything I wrote, going back to edit, realizing I hated my writing, and then getting in the way of any progress I was making. I wrote an essay of 1550 words and it was barely 4.5 pages . This is not accurate for academic papers with 1″ margins. This is a great guide, but people should be aware that these are just estimates. If you're asked to submit a paper with single spacing, you will be writing two-and-a-half pages. If you're using 1.5 spacing, it would be around three pages. Worse, all three of these answers reveal a lack of understanding of the marketplace in which writers are trying to sell storiesâ€"the same marketplace where we agents are selling stories. Finish by making a decision, tell the reader what the answer is. Start with something other than the cliche 'to conclude' or ‘ultimately.’ Teachers are tired of hearing those words, and often, they can be left out. So make sure you know the content and collect your notes -- do whatever you need to prepare. This includes collecting your stationery and paper etc, so that before you know everything you want to write about. and constantly refer to it and use the keywords to show the reader/examiner/your teacher that you are addressing the question. Having a clear idea of the question is SO important to remain organized as you do your research. This is your chance to essentially say 'so basically I was right and the previous paragraphs are the proof of it'. Once your topic sentence is written, it's time to turn your notes into sentences to supporting the claim made in your topic sentence. The majority of your body paragraph should be backing up your paragraph’s point with evidence, facts and quotes. First, write a topic sentence that summarizes your point. For direct speech, one for every time you change speaker . It’s a lot less cumbersome to skip a mention of the speaker than to add “said Mary” and “John said” after every direct quote. So theoretically, you can have a paragraph consisting of one word plus punctuation marks. 1,000 words in direct speech would therefore mean you’d write way more than the five or ten paragraphs our initial guideline suggested. Go with ‘ultimately’ however if you feel like your conclusion is incomplete without this transitional phrase. If you can, save a nice interesting fact to hit the reader with in the conclusion. For example, I am currently writing a paper and have 5,000 words, but only 17 pages . Things like paragraph size and headers need to be taken into account as well. Aye how many words do I have to put if I’m typing a 14 page essay. At the end of your paragraph, relate back to the question (don't forget your key-words) and make a judgment about this individual point in reference to your thesis. You’ve already determined what your three major points are and which notes/facts should support which points. Facts you’ve researched that don’t quite fit with your argument should be kept in another section -- that will be for your counter-argument. Trust me -- you will get brownie points for addressing these points later in your essay. Okay -- that’s a bit of an extreme example, but the reasoning holds true. Before you start writing like a determined maniac, you need to also have an outline first -- otherwise, you could end up scrapping most or all of what you wrote in the first place. So go back to your screen, accept that the first draft is going to be DARN AWFUL, and challenge yourself to write that first sentence -- then another -- and another. The tendency toward perfectionism is the enemy of all progress. These include Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri, and Verdana. Many teachers will specify this, too, so be sure to check! Along with these standard formats, you're likely to be assigned a standard font size, too. Get ready to see 12pt written somewhere in your teacher's instructions. Different fonts and different font sizes will affect the number of pages you write. This is one reason why a teacher may give an assignment length in words instead of pages - page length can be faked by changing the margins and fonts.

Admission Essay

Admission Essay Heavenly Essays by Janine W. Robinsonâ€"This collection from the popular blogger behind Essay Hell includes a wider range of schools, as well as helpful tips on honing your own essay. These essays are answers to past prompts from either the Common Application or the Universal Application, both of which Johns Hopkins accepts. You'll see a similar structure in many of the essays. I will spend six weeks here in my glory, not only studying and learning, but actually pursuing new knowledge to add to the repertoire of mankind. This one shows a panoramic view of the city of Santa Barbara, California. Here, I recall spending six weeks in my glory, not only studying and learning, but actually pursuing new knowledge to add to the repertoire of mankind. I could have easily chosen to spend my summer lazing about; in fact, my parents tried to persuade me into taking a break. Instead, I chose to do advanced molecular biology research at Stanford University. Each one of us leaves find a legacy as we for fill our purpose in life. I believe my purpose as a student is to encourage others to become active community members and motivate them to reach new heights. The Sonora Eagles were students of different grade levels, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and educational ability. The most important moment occurred during the night’s luminaria ceremony, during which cancer patients of the past and present were commemorated. Our whole team gathered around, and I asked people to share how they have been affected by cancer. The bright lights shine back, brashly revealing every crevice, nook, and cranny, gleaming across its scintillating, bare surfaces. On this first day of senior year, I set out upon my task. I procure an ordinary plastic grocery bag from my backpack. The contents inside collectively represent everything about me in high school â€" they tell a story, one all about me. This is a college essay that worked for Cornell University. The Sonora Eagles were my means for dealing with the death of my loved ones to cancer. I was never fully aware of how closely humans rely upon each other until I read The Fall of Freddy the Leaf by Leo Buscaglia in freshman year. The allegory is about a leaf that changes with the seasons, finally dying in the winter, realizing that his purpose was to help the tree thrive. After reading it, I was enlightened on the cycle of life and realized the tremendous impact my actions had on others. The exploration led me to the African Disease Prevention Project , a non-profit organization associated with several universities. From this, the voice in your writing will display your passion â€" and be a lot more interesting to read. I could have easily chosen to spend that summer the traditional way; in fact, my parents even tried to persuade me into taking a break. Instead, I chose to do molecular biology research at Stanford University. My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the time. When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. I wanted to immerse myself in my passion for biology and dip into the infinitely rich possibilities of my mind. This challenge was so rewarding to me, while at the same time I had the most fun of my life, because I was able to live with people who share the same kind of drive and passion as I do. Six months later, I step off the airplane to find myself surrounded by palm trees, with a view of the open-air airport. I chuckle to myself about the added bonus of good weather, but I know I have come to Palo Alto, California, with a much higher purpose in mind. This challenge was so rewarding to me, while at the same time I had the most fun of my life, because I was able to live with people who shared the same kind of drive and passion as I did. They turn the dial, just as they have hundreds of times before, until a soft, metallic click echoes into my eardrum and triggers their unconscious stop. I exultantly thrust open my locker door, exposing its deepest bowels candidly to the wide halls of the high school. The author starts with a very detailed story of an event or description of a person or place. My biggest advice for choosing an idea is to pick something you are passionate about. At the age of nine, I learned how to clear burning oil from the surface of water. My Dad considered this a critical life skillâ€"you know, in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed.

College Application Essay Coaching

College Application Essay Coaching Have these people review your application essay to make sure your message is on target and clear to any audience. Believe it or not, the brainstorming stage may be more tedious than writing the actual application essay. The purpose is to flesh out all of your possible ideas so when you begin writing, you know and understand where you're going with the topic. Now forget all that, because a successful college application essay is totally different. Sample essay 2 with admissions feedback This is the currently selected item. If you want to demonstrate your integrity, share a story that illustrates how you passed up an opportunity to exploit an advantage that was unfairly gained. Claiming that you have good study habits is another empty claim. Detailing the exact study habits that have helped you succeed in school, backed up with the GPA on your application, carries much more weight. This is the same approach you need to use in your essay. Line up your scenes in chronological order so that the story is easy to follow. Each university has its own set of prompts you should write about. Here is an example of a prompt from the University of California. Their goal is to pull together a certain mix of people. They don’t want a collection of copycats all doing the same thing in their respective high schools. Your essay should show something that is unique; a demonstration of a distinctive quality that no other student may choose to offer. These three facts give us the first clues as to what should be included in your essay. Universities are not just looking for students that hope to acquire good skills; they are looking for those who have a promising future. Your future success makes them look good and encourages more students to want to study with them. You have to use proper words, proper grammar and write in a positive manner. This essay can be written as a persuasive essay although it should be said to keep the persuasion at a minimum. Admission Boards do not have the time for long and winded illustrations and examples. A good topic is essential for the essay, especially if it is to catch the eye of the reader. The same process which was used to select English essay topics can be used to select admission topics as well. Simply asserting that you have what the university is looking for is not convincing; anyone could make the same claim as plausibly as you if you don't back up your claims with evidence. Stating that you believe in integrity, for example, is an easy claim that's made by thousands of politicians and used car salespeople every year. When tailoring responses to individual college prompts, it’s important to use specific details you’ve learned through visiting and research. Not only does this show colleges that you’ve have done your homework, but it also demonstrates your interest in the college â€" and colleges want to admit students who are likely to enroll. Show your knowledge of the college by mentioning specific courses, professors, places of interest, and more. Show how you fit into the campus culture and how you will impact the community through specific examples. At this point you already have all the information you need to create a powerful essay but now you need to start building it. Remember, that every story has a main plot, a few characters that the reader can connect with, and a slow build up to the climax. Your essay should reflect a powerful sense of commitment to your goals and your future success. Have another person (or several!) read your essay, whether it’s a teacher, guidance counselor, parent, or trusted friend. You know what you meant to say, but is it clear to someone else reading your work? This final step will likely take much longer than writing the entire essay. You may have to revise several times before your essay delivers your message perfectly. As you go through your revision keep these basic guidelines in mind. It’s time for you to narrow down your options for an essay topic and begin to build your story. Using words in your essay that you don't typically use in your daily conversations can sound awkward and forced. Words have nuance to them, and simply inserting a word from the thesaurus is a great way to destroy that nuance. Thesaurus abuse is a lazy and easily spotted trick, and seasoned admissions officers will see right through it. If you feel that you're overusing a particular word, think of alternatives on your own without consulting a thesaurus; using words that you're familiar with will help you avoid misusing them.

While your adverse experience should convey hardship, the bulk of your response should focus on your response to this adversity. For example, the loss of a parent is devastating, but your essay should focus on how you used your pain to inspire you to give back to others or connect more deeply with your community. Choose adverse experiences that allow you to meaningfully demonstrate self growth. Instead, consider what excites you about your intended field of study, as well as the specific dimensions of this subject that fit your strengths and ambitions. Avoid using slang, scientific phrases, uncommon foreign phrases, other hard-to-decipher language and profanity. If you speak from the heart, it will show, and your essay will flow more easily. Choosing something you’ve experienced will also give you the vivid and specific details needed in your essay. Admissions committees are looking for an in-depth essay. Make what you write about what you learned from the experience, not the exact details or context of the story. Remember this is more of a written job interview than a first date in paragraph form. The Genre Of The College Admission Essay

The Genre Of The College Admission Essay After you brainstorm, you’ll know what you want to say, but you must decide how you’re going to say it. Create an outline that breaks down the essay into sections. Get your creative juices flowing by brainstorming all the possible ideas you can think of to address your college essay question. Avoid sorting through your existing English class essays to see if the topics fit the bill. These pieces rarely showcase who you are as an applicant. Remember, you won’t have a lot of time to impress your readers so your story must cut to the chase pretty quickly. Think of it like you are creating a preview to a new movie. You want to draw the reader in with the first words you say and keep them there until they finish your paper. Next you will compile a list of your personal life experiences. Take time to understand the question or prompt being asked. I have learned to accept my “ambiguity” as “diversity,” as a third-culture student embracing both identities in this diverse community that I am blessed to be a part of. This ambiguity of existence, however, has granted me the opportunity to absorb the best of both worlds. This mélange of cultures in my East-meets-West room embodies the diversity that characterizes my international student life. Leaving home in the beginning of my adolescence, I was sent out on a path of my own. While for some, high school is the best time of their lives, for me, high school has represented some of the best and, hopefully, worst times. Even with the struggles I’ve faced with my family, I am grateful for this path. It has brought me to a place that I only thought was fictional. In this new place I feel like a real person, with real emotions. This place is somewhere where I can express myself freely and be who I want to be. I am a much stronger, healthier, and more resilient person than I was two years ago. If you do an online search of any university application requirements, this is pretty much the blanket list they will give you. But these are only surface materials that anyone can give. What they are really looking for is the underlying truths they will find in these documents. Your academic resume, which should include your GPA, completed coursework, and SAT/ACT scores. You should also include some evidence that you are ready for college, a record of your extracurricular activities, work experience, and recommendations. College essay questions often suggest one or two main ideas or topics of focus. These can vary from personal to trivial, but all seek to challenge you and spark your creativity and insight. The single most important part of your essay preparation may be simply making sure you truly understand the question or essay prompt. When you're finished writing, you need to make sure that your essay still adheres to the prompt. Most universities are looking for two different packages when you submit your college application. CollegeXpress has everything you need to simplify your college search, get connected to schools, and find your perfect fit. This forces you to read each word individually and increases your chances of finding a typo. Reading aloud will also help you ensure your punctuation is correct, and it’s often easier to hear awkward sentences than see them. Don’t rely solely on the computer spelling and grammar check. Computers can't detect the context in which you're using words, so be sure to review carefully. They might be fine in a text message, but not in your college essay. Let your essay sit for a while before you proofread it. Approaching the essay with a fresh perspective gives your mind a chance to focus on the actual words rather than seeing what you think you wrote. All good stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end, so shape your story so that it has an introduction, body, and conclusion. Following this natural progression will make your essay coherent and easy to read. The rules for writing a good essay are no different. While it hasn’t been easy, I am glad to be where I am today. Now my friends in Switzerland come to me asking me for advice and help, and I feel as if I am a vital member of our community. My close friend Akshay recently started stressing about whether his parents were going to get divorced. With John’s advice, I started checking in on Akshay, spending more time with him, and coaching him before and after he talked to his parents.

Global Assessment of Biodiversity and the Anthropogenic...

The global assessment of biodiversity and the anthropogenic impacts on them should be an urgent priority for conservation biologists. Though overhunting, introduced species, habitat destruction, trophic cascades and climate change (evil quintet) are known to be the potential anthropogenic threats that are likely to drive extinctions in the future (Diamond 1984, Brook et al. 2008), more frequently, conservation biologists have focused their attention on visible threats like habitat destruction, in comparison with invisible threats like overhunting (Galetti Dirzo 2013). Traditional biodiversity assessments often ignore hunting pressure though they are aware of its presence, or classify into ways (e.g., heavy, moderate or low hunting) that are unsuitable for auditing by other researchers (Galetti Dirzo 2013). For example, what might be classified as heavy hunting pressure by one biologist can be classified as low hunting pressure by another. Moreover, also within the hunting classific ations of a biologist, what is the difference between heavy, moderate and low hunting pressure? The use of different standards makes auditing of hunting pressure difficult. Here we ask how to measure the intensity of hunting pressure. Knowing this answer will help us better understand the effects of hunting on biodiversity loss and set conservation priorities more efficiently. Viability of Software Tools

Question: Discuss about the Viability of Software Tools. Answer: Introduction: In the area of the modern education system, alternative learning has become necessary, which can be obtained by the use of the innovative tools of the computer software in the schools for education purpose. In the field of education and learning, this product is utilized to help instructors to screen understudies' exercises. Learning with innovation has ended up fundamental in today's schools. Throughout the whole world, governments, other training institutes, scientists, schools, other educators and guardians are now considering technology as one of the important part of educating the students. Computers and digital boards are currently using in schools and this has changed the way of education. Portable devices such as computers, projectors and other electronic gadgets are using for learning purpose in the schools and the whole system is being more interesting day by day. Based on this scenario, the present research project will be regarding the viability of the software tools for supporting the students in the Saudi schools. This project will be conducted by the use of the secondary data. Mostly the research work will be the review of the available literature in the area of the selected research topic. This will be PhD project needed to be completed within the time period of three years. The main research question of the project is: what are the impacts of the software tools in education in the Saudi schools? In this context the sub questions of the research project are: What are the different types of software tools available for learning in the schools? What are the different types of software tools currently using in the Saudi schools for education? What are the potential challenges faced by the Saudi Schools for using the software tools? What are the benefits of using the software tools for education in the Saudi schools? Aims and objects of the project: The main aim of the research project is to find out the viability of the software tools for education in the Saudi schools. The objectives of the study are derived from the sub questions defined in the above section: To understand the different type of software tools available for the assisting the students in education To understand the different types of software tools that are currently using for assisting the students in the Saudi schools To understand the benefits of the software tools using in the Saudi schools for assisting the students To understand the potential challenges faced by the Saudi schools in the area of the usage of the software tools Significance of the project: At present, the usage of the software tools and internet technology has gained a high priority in the area of the education. Mixed learning techniques can advance the reconciliation of multi-modular, multi-channel and multi-source realizing which incorporates on the web and conventional taking in; this helps learners create and enhance their learning self-sufficiency and to self-figure out how to best suit their learning style, way of life and work style (Al?Qahtani Higgins 2013). In the recent few years, innovative use of the information technology in education has faced huge updates. These new updates have opened some new doors to the area of education in the schools. The software and hardware tools of the information technology are helping the students for learning new things in interesting way and they are able to find different types of alternative solutions for one topic. The web interfaces those gadgets and associates understudies to each other in the classroom, through the school and around the globe (Asiri et al. 2012). In a traditional education system, one teacher gives lessons to all the students. There may be problem with the delivery of the lessons as the way of communicating may not be suitable for all types of students. In this context, digital technology of the information technology is helping the students to have the lesions in audio visual format and they can also store the lessons. This is helping them to learn the lessons with more focus. Computers and digital boards are currently using in schools and this has changed the way of education. (Al-Khowaiter, Dwivedi Williams 2015). This section analyzes what educators may do to bolster understudy learning through applications and asset devices, paying little mind to the gadget. It concentrates on those instruments that are important and utilized as a part of the elementary school environment, with a specific accentuation on the Saudi Arabian setting (Almarabeh, Rajab Majdalawi 2016). Learning with innovation has ended up fundamental in today's schools. Throughout the whole world, governments, other training institutes, scientists, schools, other educators and guardians are now considering technology as one of the important part of educating the students.. In Saudi Arabia, it is recognized that advances in innovation have an impact in transit individuals make, share, utilize and create data in the public eye, and that youngsters should be exceptionally talented in their utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) (Yaghoobi Razmjoo 2016). Building up understudies' information and aptitudes identified with ICT in the school years gives an essential establishing to sometime down the road. It likewise gives value of chance, paying little respect to foundation. General social discourse and the well known press have a tendency to make speculations regarding youngsters, their entrance to and utilization of innovation (FernNdez-LPez et al. 2013). Late writing have tested these presumptions and recognize that, despite the fact that understudies today may have been naturally introduced to an innovatively rich world, they may not be energetic and skilful clients of innovation (Hasanain, Vallmuur Clark 2015). Promote, there is acknowledgment that only giving access to innovation is insufficient. Significant advancement of innovation based learning and aptitudes is critical for all understudies, with a specific end goal to maintain a strategic distance from a wonder known as the 'second-level computerized separate', whereby indi viduals have radically separated abilities, which thusly impact how individuals take an interest in the public eye. The need to keep pace with society and get ready understudies for their parts in the public eye are only two motivations to utilize innovation in training (Alghamdi Higgins 2015). Teachers and scientists indicate the capability of innovation to build inspiration and engagement of learners, provide food for various learning styles and enhance learning results. When we discuss innovation in educating and taking in, "incorporation" is frequently utilized. Integrating innovation into the educational programs happened through a worry that we may have been educating about and instructing how to utilize innovation yet not tending to how understudies can apply innovation related learning and abilities. To address this issue, there was a move to incorporate innovation into every key learning range (Alresheed, Leask Raiker 2015). In the field of education and learning, this product is utilized to help instructors to screen understudies' exercises. In particular terms, e-learning is construct not just with respect to appropriated learning, internet learning, virtual learning, electronic or organized adapting additionally on testing and assessing the best input, intercession and the connection of a few stages in e-learning situations between the teacher and learner (Hein et al. 2015). Enthusiasm for e-learning is on an upward pattern especially for those as of now in all day work and quick to proceed with their instruction as well as expert preparing. The rate of organizations wanting to give e-learning backing to their staff has ascended from 38.5% in 2007 to 51% in 2011. Whether the method of conveyance would be on the web or disconnected, synchronous or non concurrent through standalone or arranged PCs or other electronic gadgets, learning would be conveyed utilizing electronic gadgets. Instructor understudy connection with the assistance of electronic media and application apparatuses is named as the idea of e-learning (Robertson Al-Zahrani 2012). Most of the software applications for the learning purpose are developed on web 2.0 tools. The social media applications such as Twitter, Slide Share, Picasa, Media wiki are used for the education purpose also (Yaghoobi Razmjoo 2016). In the area of the modern education system, alternative learning has become necessary. In the context of the schools, the text books that are used are not sufficient to provide the required support to the students regarding the alternative learning style. The internet technology has brought a lot of advantages for getting extra study materials for learning a topic from different aspects. This increases the ability of critical thinking of the students (Hasanain, Vallmuur Clark 2015). Theoretical Framework and Methods: The method of the research study will be designed by following the realism research philosophy. The research approach of the project will be the deductive approach. Using the realism research philosophy, the insight meaning of the prewritten research papers and journals will be understood and then the present scenario of the Saudi schools regarding the software tools for supporting the students will be compared with the findings of the literature review. This will help to understand the ultimate viability of the software tools using for supporting the students in their education in the Saudi schools. The research work will be conducted through the collection and analysis of the secondary data available in the area of the use of the software tools for supporting the students in the Saudi schools. In order to collect the secondary data for the research study, the research papers of the previous researchers needed to be collected. The type of the research project will be the literature review regarding the use of the software tools in the area of the education in the Saudi schools. Most of the information will be available in the electronic format. In this context, the online library and other web resources will be helpful. The initial understanding of the research problem and scope will also be understood by the use of the secondary data sources. In order to conduct the research study, it is necessary to read the data sources carefully and understand the insight meanings of the statements given by the previous researchers. Research Plan and Timeline: The whole timeframe of three years will be subdivided into 9 quarters (3 in each year). The research project will be completed by following the timeline given below: Activities 1st Quarter 2nd Quarter 3rd Quarter 4th Quarter 5th Quarter 6th Quarter 7th Quarter 8th Quarter 9th Quarter Topic Selection Draft Proposal Background Literature Final Proposal Methodology Selection Literature Review Secondary Data Collection Data Analysis Conclusion Final Submission References: Alghamdi, A. The True Meaning of Debate free essay sample

â€Å"Flight crew prepare for takeoff,† the captain of the plane announces over the loudspeaker. Here I am with my seat in the upright position. I am on a four hour flight to Dallas, Texas, en route to the national debate tournament. The Dallas Ten. That’s what they call us. After months of tryouts and practices, I am one of the elite ten debaters representing my school. Our megalomaniacal coach (his words, not mine), stands in front of me, screaming at my debate partner. As his words resonate through the cabin and saliva spatters everywhere, the flight attendant runs over and tries to calm him down. All I hope is that I am not the next target of my coach’s explosive temper. We land just as soon as I finish reviewing Michigan’s â€Å"Gates Counter-Plan.† The topic of the debate is: the U.S. federal government should substantially increase public health assistance to Sub-Saharan Africa. We will write a custom essay sample on The True Meaning of Debate or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Mr. Miles, who has not smiled since he was twelve years-old, has publicly embarrassed every debater on the plane, except for me. We are in the shuttle, on the way to the hotel, when my time comes. â€Å"MEDIOCRITY IS NOT AN OPTION!† he yells, when I don’t have the answer to his question. A wave of spit drenches those sitting in the rows behind me. I am embarrassed and defeated, as Mr. Miles singles me out in front of the team; I am also determined, now more than ever, to win this tournament. There are twenty minutes until our first round of debate. After the required handshakes and coin flip, it’s time to start the show. I whip out my perpetually-rehearsed 1AC speech and begin. â€Å"Contention 1 with regards to harms, Contention 2 with regards to inherency, Contention 3 with regards to topicality, Contention 4 with regards to solvency, and finally the affirmative plan.† One look at the expressions on my opponents’ faces and I know I have this in the bag. It’s an easy win, and I breeze through the next three rounds. Quarter final time. I present the affirmative case, and I’m on fire. However, upon cross examination, the negative team goes for a sneak-attack: the malficeian theory. The debate rages on and finally the decision is made—my winning streak is over. I sully out of the room with consternation on my face and knot in my stomach. I let down my school, my team, and above all—the coach. During the award ceremony, I receive a trophy for being in the top eight teams of the tournament. Mr. Miles approaches and beckons me into the hallway. I brace myself for the wave of ridicule and saliva. He takes the trophy out of my hand and takes a good, long look. Then he does something that he had never done before. He gives me a smile. â€Å"I’m pleased David,† he says. â€Å"I’m very pleased.† As the words come out of his mouth, a plethora of thoughts rush through me. And I have a moment of realization, an epiphany, if you will. I realize that I am not a debater for anyone or anything else. Not for Mr. Miles and not for a shiny statue. I debate because of all that I receive from the sport. I relish a chance to research a topic and all of its views. I embrace the teamwork that is essential for success. And I embrace the fact that the debate has done more for me than I have for it. The team has made me a proficient speaker and writer, one who can get his point across clearly, with just the right amount of words. Like in this case: 615 words, to be utterly exact.

Comparison of electric and gas

Comparison of electric and gas Introduction The auto industry has been undergoing changes since the first car was invented in 1871. Most of these changes are designed to help improve the efficiency and comfort of cars. Because of the increasing cost of gasoline and diesel, most of the latest developments in the performance of cars have been directed at the creation of alternative forms of power for the machines.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Comparison of electric and gas-powered vehicles specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More These investigative and development processes have led to the emergence of electric cars as possible replacements of gasoline/diesel-powered cars. This essay seeks to offer a comparison of electric and traditional fuel cars. To this end, the initial part of the paper shall dwell on the similarities and differences of the two types of cars. Afterwards, the merits and demerits of each of the two systems shall be provided before a conclusion is drawn regarding which of the two systems is better in terms of efficiency and convenience. Similarities and differences between electric and gas cars Electric cars and traditional gas-powered vehicles look similar from the outside. They generally have similar wind-resisting shapes and share common features such as side-mirrors and indication systems. Their interiors are also generally similar, each being equipped with a steering wheel, driving pedals and regular car seats. However, this is where the similarity stops. When one moves to the engine system, the first revelation is that electric cars only have one moving part-the motor [1]. The motor is powered by a fitted rechargeable battery pack and it propels the drive train causing the car to move. Gasoline cars, on the other hand, are powered by internal combustion engines, which derive power from the combustion of gasoline/diesel. Unlike electric cars which come with a huge battery pack, gas-powered cars have a fuel tank, which mostly goes under the car, behind the back seat. The internal combustion engines also require some electric power to start hence the reason why the cars using these systems are fitted with small batteries connected to spark plugs and whose intention is to ignite the fuel. Their engines are very complicated and have hundreds of moving parts, starting from the pistons to other minute rotator valves regulating the inflow of fuel into the engine.Advertising Looking for essay on land transport? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Gas-powered engines release emissions, which are let out to the air through an exhaust/tail pipe. In contrast, electric cars do not release any emissions, and are, therefore, not fitted with tail pipes. On the body of the vehicle, electric vehicles are fitted with a recharge socket, into which fits a special electric plug. Gas-powered cars have a pipe that connects to the tank with an ope ning fitted on the body of the vehicle for easy access. Pros of electric vehicles/ cons of internal combustion engines Electric cars have a number of advantages over traditional internal combustion engines [2]. Top on the list is the fact that these vehicles are very energy efficient. Electric vehicles convert approximately 60 percent of the energy stored in the battery packs to power that runs the wheels. Petrol-powered cars only convert approximately 20 percent of the energy contained in the fuel to energy driving the wheels. Another advantage that electric cars have over internal combustion engines is that they are very environmentally friendly. Electric vehicles do not emit any gaseous discharges like those powered by traditional. If the power used to charge them is obtained from power plants run by wind, solar and water, the entire process from power-generation to usage in driving is 100 percent clean [3]. Electric vehicles are also better in performance than those powered by i nternal combustion engines. The cars powered by electricity run quietly and have a better and stronger acceleration rate than those that run on petrol and diesel. They (electric cars) are also cheaper to maintain because they have very few moveable parts. Finally, electric vehicles contribute greatly to a reduction in energy dependence. For many years, car users have had to depend on a limited number of sources of energy to power their engines. This has had the drawback of paralyzing the transport industry once the supply of oil goes down. The entry of electric powered vehicles comes in to bridge this gap making socio-economic systems run efficiently. Pros of internal combustion engines/ cons of electric vehicles Internal combustion engines also have some significant advantages over electric vehicles. Top on the list is the fact that gasoline/diesel powered engines have a long driving range. A traditional vehicle once filled up with fuel can travel over 300 miles before the need to refuel. Electric vehicles when fully charged can only drive for anything between 100 and 200 miles before they are recharged [1]. This makes the internal combustion engines safer to use when going for long-distance journeys and more so in remote areas where there is an irregular penetration of electricity supply. The second advantage that tradition cars have over electric vehicles is that the recharge time for the latter is very long. Normally, it takes anything between four and eight hours to fully recharge the battery pack of an electric car.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Comparison of electric and gas-powered vehicles specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Even an average quick charge, which fills up 80% of the battery pack, takes at least 30 minutes [3]. In contrast, it takes less than five minutes (depending on the capacity) to fill up a car with petrol or diesel. The battery packs that supply the driving power for electric cars require a considerable amount of space in the vehicle and are generally quite heavy. This causes the vehicle to dedicate a considerable percentage of the generated energy to the battery weight. The batteries also need to be replaced after periods of use. Unfortunately, these batteries do not come cheap. In addition, finding a replacement can be a challenge especially in countries where the use of electric vehicles has not been well embraced. Summary and Conclusion This essay had set out to offer a comparative analysis of electric vehicles and traditional gas-powered cars. A list of similarities and differences was offered before the discussion delved into the strengths and weaknesses of each of the two types of vehicles. It has been shown that the two types of cars have similar body and cabin designs. However, their differences come in their engines and associated features such as battery packs and fuel tanks. Electric cars have also been indicated to be more efficien t and cheaper to maintain than traditional petrol/diesel powered cars. The traditional vehicles have the advantage of going long distances without the need to refill and take a short time to fill up. In conclusion, it should be noted that even though electric vehicles appear to have more strengths than traditional vehicles, it might take time before their use becomes common. This is because it will take some time for the installation of recharge stations and maintenance stations. Reference List D. Sandalow, The Electric Vehicle and the Burden of History.
